Art Therapy
Art Therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses art materials, such as paints, chalk, markers and clay. Art therapy combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process. By engaging in the process of art making you begin your own healing and will be guided to find your own discoveries within.
Our therapists have many specific definitions of art therapy, but most of them fall into one of two general categories. The first is a belief in the healing power of the creative process of art making. This view embraces the idea that the process of making art is therapeutic, thus art making is seen as an opportunity to express one's self imaginatively an experience that over time can lead to personal fulfillment and recovery.
The second definition is based on the idea that art is a means of symbolic communication. This approach, often referred to as art psychotherapy emphasizes the drawings, paintings, and other art expressions as a tool in communicating issues, emotions, and conflicts. The art becomes a powerful tool which can enhance verbal exchange between our clients and therapists. This helps to achieve insight as well as resolving conflicts and problem solving, which in turn can lead to forming new perceptions that lead to positive changes and healing.
At Prominence Treatment Center we believe in giving our clients a variety of therapeutic approaches. Art Therapy is not only a way to express feelings but also a means of relieving stress no matter your artistic skill level.
