Oxycontin
What is Oxycontin?
Oxycontin is a prescription pain killer that is used to relive moderate to severe pain. It falls into the class of medications known as opiate (narcotic) analgesics. Oxycontin functions by altering the way the brain and nervous system react and respond to pain. Oxycontin specifically is an oral, time-released version of oxycodone. Some negative side effects of oxycontin include constipation, memory loss, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches, and dry mouth. While with proper use and supervision, oxycontin has been shown to improve the quality of life for people in severe pain, improper use has been rampant and can have very negative effects.
The abuse of oxycontin is very dangerous. Oxycontin is a highly addictive substance and abuse transpires when individuals take more than is needed for pain control. This is especially true for people who take oxycontin to get high. If you know of someone who uses oxycontin in ways not advised by their physician, they may need help.
Side effects of Oxycontin include but are not limited to:
- Blood pressure increase
- Respiratory attack and potential failure
- Heart rate reduction
- Muscle problems
- Coma
- Death
The first step necessary for the recovery from oxycontin abuse is detoxification. Withdrawal symptoms associated with oxycontin have been known to be very uncomfortable and a threat to a person’s health. The right treatment should offer a full array of medically supervised detoxification programs to ensure that each individual gets the best possible treatment and detoxification experience. The goal of oxycontin treatment is to safely and comfortably lower the individual’s desire and need for the drug. Detox generally takes one full week.
