Dual Diagnosis
What is dual diagnosis?
Dual diagnosis is a term used to describe the condition of an individual who suffers from more than one mental disorder. The most common dual diagnosis is that of substance abuse and depression. Individuals who are dually diagnosed often require special medical and psychological treatment as both diagnoses require individual attention but also play roles in one another’s outcome.
Who gets dually diagnosed?
The rate of co-occurring disorders is very high among individuals who suffer from mental disorders. Some researchers have shown that almost half of the individuals that suffer from severe mental issues also are addicted to a substance. In addition almost one third of all alcohol abusers have been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Moreover, half of drug abusers have been diagnosed. It is no secret that addiction and mental issues strongly affect one another.
Mental Issues that are often dually diagnosed with addiction:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bi-polar disorder
- Post traumatic stress disorders
Mental Illness and Addiction, what is the connection?
It is widely believe that using drugs does not cause mental illnesses but rather mental illnesses may cause people to seek outside substances. While there is a very big difference between someone who is depressed because they abuse substances and a person who uses drugs because they are depressed, there is research to suggest that there are some similarities between the brain chemistry of both types of individuals.
