What is Anxiety?

AnxietyAnxiety is a mood disorder or condition that can occur without a real type of stimuli or trigger. Anxiety is seen throughout all people and can occur at any time and in any place. Most people experience anxiety however it is often controlled. Anxiety becomes a real medical issue when it no longer becomes random but instead becomes continuous and unmanageable. When anxiety persists, it can cause such distress and complication that it can hinder and hamper a person’s ability to lead a normal life.

The list of anxiety disorders in lengthy and includes panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder,  phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder. Each type of anxiety disorder has a different origin and each may require a different treatment. Individuals that suffer from anxiety disorders can be living lives full of fear, worry and stress and this can often have an immensely negative effect on physical and mental wellbeing. Anxiety disorders can be very serious and require medical attention immediately.  With the proper medical and psychological treatment, anxiety can be managed and controlled.

Distinctive features in specific anxiety disorders:

Panic – Individual experiences sudden and repeated feelings of terror that something may go wrong or their life is in danger.
Obsessive Compulsive disorder- Constant thoughts of fear related to performing specific routines and rituals continuously. Individuals become obsessive over these rituals and routines.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder- Usually follows a traumatic or life changing event. Individuals experience occurring thoughts and memories related to the aforementioned experience.
Social Anxiety Disorder- Individuals experience overwhelming and unexplainable worrying and self consciousness about everyday social activities. Often people feel they are constantly being judged and they fear embarrassment and mockery.
Phobias-  Intense fear of one specific thing, situation or location. Examples include spiders, water or heights.

Symptoms of Anxiety include but are not limited to:

  • Sleeping problems
  • Feelings of panic
  • Uncontrollable and obsessive thoughts
  • Feelings of fear
  • Dry mouth
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Nausea
  • Muscle tension
  • Dizziness
  • Feelings of uneasiness
  • Nightmares
  • Ritualistic behaviors, such as repeated hand washing
  • Shortness of breath
